If I were a betting woman, I’d bet you have some goals you want to achieve for yourself.
And, if I were really feeling lucky, I’d bet you feel stuck on at least one of those goals.
You know what you want. Maybe you’ve even taken some action. But, now you find yourself at a standstill … totally unsure what to do next.
You might not say the exact words, “I’m stuck,” but some flavor of this is likely to pop up.
It might sound like:
- “I don’t know what to do next.”
- “Nothing is working.”
- “I’m not sure.”
- “I just wish someone would tell me what to do next.”
If you feel this way, you are not alone.
In fact, this is such a common problem … that is why I’d be willing to bet you are experiencing it in some area of your life or work right at this very moment.
Here’s the great news: you can get unstuck. Right now. Not tomorrow. Right-freaking-now.
Here’s the exact steps to take – and these are the steps I take when I get stuck.
Step 1: Stop telling yourself you are stuck. Your brain always wants you to be correct. When you constantly tell it you are stuck (or don’t know what to do or can’t do it), it will look for proof you are stuck. Or, worse yet, create situations to keep you stuck. Thinking you are stuck all the time just creates a cycle of stuck-ness.
Step 2: Take one step … in any direction. It can be the smallest of steps. It can even be in what you worry might be the ‘wrong’ direction. The goal is to get out of your head and into action. You can do this by asking yourself what the next best thing is to do. Then go do that thing.
Step 3. Rinse and repeat. Once you start taking action, you’ll gain momentum. But, the moment your brain sees a challenge, it will likely try to convince you that you are stuck again. When that happens, gently remind yourself you know what to do and go take one small step.
Feeling stuck and uncertain are very normal parts of life and business.
Your goal when this happens is to make one small decision and go do that thing.
Yep … it really is that simple.
