That one thing? Identify your core values and compare them to the values of the companies you’re considering.

Your core values are your internal GPS—they guide your decisions, helping you determine what feels aligned and what doesn’t. They drive everything you do, often on a subconscious level. These are the things you will stand by and stand up for—even if it means standing alone.

A company’s values are the things that matter so much to the organization that they will stand by and stand up for them—even if it puts them out of business.

When your values and a company’s values are misaligned, it can lead to frustration, dissatisfaction, and a shorter tenure than you might have planned.

That’s why it’s essential to identify your values and do your best to work for a company that matches or complements them. At the very least, you want to be in an environment where your values aren’t in direct conflict.

The only way to know if you and a potential employer are truly a fit is to know your own values and ask about theirs.

✅ Do take the time to get clear on your values and ask questions to ensure alignment.

Ask about what their values look like in action—how they show up in day-to-day work, leadership decisions, and company culture. Then, consider whether that aligns with how you want to show up every day.

Share your values during the interview process, and ask how they would be seen as an asset to the team and company culture.

When you know your core values, you’ll have a much easier time recognizing whether a company is truly the right fit—or if it’s time to keep looking.
